About Us

Our Core Values

We believe in community.

We believe that having a community of like-minded individuals who share the same goals and values is essential to achieving our goals and living a fulfilled life. Welcome to our community!

We believe in the power of diversity in medicine.

We believe that diversity in any field is essential, including medicine. Representation of all backgrounds and perspectives is necessary to get the full benefit of the healthcare system; to ignore this is to take away from the patients’ and medical professionals’ experience.

We believe in the upliftment of the African continent.

We are committed to efforts that shine light on the beauty of Africa. The AfroMedics does this by sharing the journey and experiences of African and African-Descent healthcare professionals and providing mentorship and resources for success. We hope to join efforts that will increase the number of African and African-Descent healthcare professionals and improve healthcare access among Africans and in African Countries.

We believe in knowledge, mentorship, and collaboration:

Because no single individual has all the skills, knowledge, and resources necessary to live a successful life. We believe that mentorship and collaboration are essential to learning and developing as individuals and professionals.

About Us

As international students who have taken very non-traditional paths to medicine, we understand many of the struggles international students and immigrants face on this path. We know the struggle with choosing an undergraduate major, maintaining a good GPA, working part-time on campus, and gathering volunteering experiences. We understand how frustrating it can be to find a physician to shadow and get research and clinical experiences in a place where you have very few connections and support. We know how intimidating preparing for the MCAT is and how overwhelming and expensive the AMCAS, AACOM, and TMDAS applications are; we are here to help you simplify the process. With the aim of creating a space for you to get the information you need to successfully apply to medical school as an international student and immigrant, no matter what part of the process you are in right now, we are committed to sharing resources that will be very helpful to you and your journey.

Inclusion Policy

At The AfroMedics, everyone is welcome. Diversity is one of our core values, and we ensure that every member of our community feels like they belong. We believe that every individual contributes a unique perspective and every member of our community deserves to feel seen and heard. We encourage every member of our community to remain authentic because we love you just the way you are. Our community is a respectful and judgment-free zone where every individual is welcome.

Sponsorship Policy

All community members, attendees, speakers, sponsors, and volunteers at our events must agree with the following code of conduct. The AfroMedics will enforce this code throughout the event. We expect cooperation from all participants to help ensure a safe environment for everybody.

We expect that every event we organize provides a welcoming, inclusive, and harassment-free environment for all attendees, sponsors, and organizers. We do not tolerate harassment of event participants in any form. Harassment includes offensive verbal comments related to gender identity and expression, age, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, ethnicity, religion, technology choices, showing sexual images in public spaces, deliberate intimidation, stalking, following, harassing photography or recording, sustained disruption of talks or other events, inappropriate physical contact, and unwelcome sexual attention. No sexual language and imagery are not appropriate at any of our event venues and our online media. Any event participant or community member violating these rules is expected to comply when asked to stop, or they will be expelled from the event without a refund at the discretion of the event organizers.

All sponsors are also subject to the anti-harassment policy. Sponsors should not use sexualized images, activities, or other material. Volunteers should not use sexualized clothing/uniforms/costumes or otherwise create a sexualized environment. If you are being harassed, notice that someone else is being harassed, or have any other concerns, please contact a member of our team. We value you.

The AfroMedics has no tolerance regarding suitcasing and outboarding at our live events. Suitcasing describes what happens when a non-sponsoring party gains access to an event and then solicits business from the attendees without the authorization of the organizers. If any event attendee at our event is found soliciting business, they will be asked to leave immediately without a refund at the discretion of the event organizers.

Outboarding is an unethical practice when a concurrent event related to an already existing event seeks to benefit from the attendees of the organizer’s event. Like outboarding, partial outboarding refers to a situation where sponsoring companies pay minimally for sponsoring but choose to organize events that the organizers do not sanction for the attendees of the organizer’s event. This practice is unethical and would not be tolerated at The AfroMedics.

We implore all our community members, sponsors, partners, and attendees to be attentive to sponsors at our events. If you are invited to any other event at any of our official events that clash with our events’ timing, we ask that you decline such an invitation. Also, if you are given any product at our event and the brand offering you that product is not one of our listed sponsors, we ask you not to accept the product. These actions will go a long way in supporting our events and community. We are glad you are a part of this community.

Winnie Adebayo

Hi There, I am Winnie Adebayo. If you met me in person, it wouldn’t take long for you to know that I love medicine and healthcare. I am also creative, so you will find me in other spaces doing other cool things (e.g., Winie’s Student World).

I got my Bachelors in Nursing from South Carolina State University and my Ph.D. from the University of Miami. Professionally, I have been a nurse since 2013 and have worked as an assistant professor for over four years. I am over the moon to go into medicine. When I’m not productive, you will find me ordering food or eating out and watching romantic comedies (I am a romantic)!

Oluwadarasimi Fadeyibi

Hi! My name is Dara Fadeyibi. I received my Bachelor’s degree in Biology from Lee University and my  Master’s degree in Biomedical Science from the University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth, TX. I have worked in research and development for two years, and I am excited to be finally embarking on this journey to becoming a physician. I love spending time in nature, hiking, counting the stars, meditating, just being lost in the wonders of the world. You can probably already tell that I love and enjoy my own company a little too much, lol. I also derive a lot of joy from writing and listening to audiobooks about all kinds of things. My greatest desire is for every individual to live the life they love, freely and fully. And I hope that for you as well. Thank you for stopping by today!
